How to find the IBM Part/FRU Number:

The Field Replacement Unit part number is 7-digits in length, and it is mainly used when you
need to replace a defective part currently installed in your personal computer.  When you place
an order using a FRU part number, the package will come with the replacement part only; no
other materials will come with the package unless otherwise stated.
The marketing part number is 7-digits in length, and it is mainly used when you want to add
accessories to your computer. When you place an order using a marketing part number, the
package will come with all the materials you need to completely install the new addition to
your computer.
If you find that there is not a marketing part number available for the product you desire,
then it is only available as a
Field Replacement Unit (FRU). Usually this is the case when
the product you desire was originally packaged in your personal computer, and it was only
intended to be offered as a replacement.

How to find the Dell Part Number:

Typically, the Dell Part Number is 5 digits and alphanumeric. In most cases there will be
a white label on the assembly that contains alpha characters XX-0XXXXX where the X's
could be any characters. The actual part number is shown as the second set of X's starting
with the 0. So with the characters CN-0MD666, the Dell
Part Number would be MD666.

The other way that the part number may be indicated is with embossed letters on the
particular item following the letters P/N.

What is the Service Tag or Express Service Code?

The Service Tag is an alphanumeric (contains both numbers and letters) code that acts like a
serial number for the product to which it is attached. It can be found attached as apermanent
label on every Dell computer and many other standalone Dell products. Service tags contain
everything Dell needs to identify a system and its components as well as that product's warranty
information. This allows for more effective troubleshooting and warranty support of Dell products.

The Express Service Code is a numeric (number only) version of the Service Tag provided to
customers for quick access into Dell's phone support system. When calling Dell, using the
Express Service Code allows customers to connect directly to the operator or technician queue
for their product and shortens wait time.
